I prefer the top design as it looks like Charles Dickens is looking towards you.
I also think that the first design looks better. I think that due to the fact Charles Dickens is looking away in the second design it draws your eyes away from the text and therefore away from the main content.
I also prefer the first design, as he looks as if he is looking into the page, rather than out of it. This is a classic technique used in magazines all the time. I would try to make the background colour lighter, as it may be difficult to read the text due to a lack of contrast.
