Tired of Illness...

Monday morning I received feedback for my website. It turned out that a lot of changes were needed. As I was and still am pretty ill, I went home at dinner time and carried on with my website from their. The changes I took on were the alignment of the website, the colour of the banner, an insertion of a footer bar, a side bar at either side to show the edges of the website, and I placed 3 explanations on each page which lowered the number of pages. I also took out the index page which allows the user to get straight in to the basics in computing.

A few more things still need to be changed in order to complete this. These things are the browser chrome colour and the images. Instead of using part of an image, I made them all smaller to fit in to the space provided on each page.

Tuesday started with a little time to play about with our presentations before moving on to the timed task. This timed task was about an article regarding ‘Jonathon Gee’. This was a little more difficult compared to the previous weeks, completing the task just minutes before the hand in. Each of the previous timed task are said to be practice work, building up to the main project next week on the assignment hand in day. I am both worried and excited about next week. The worry comes from the precise measurements we need to take on for next week, practically making the design as much like the completed state as possible. The excitement comes from the fact that I find the timed tasks some what enjoyable and the outcomes can be really appreciated.

The afternoon of Tuesday was spent working on the presentation yet again. I am getting to the stages where I feel satisfied with the state of the presentation. All that is needed to do on this now is a little more work on the comparison of the times font line. It does seem to be quite difficult as the typographer made the typefaces so similar, with only miner changes in the style.

So, things I need to do this week:
- Complete the image task on the website.
- Add browser chrome colour.
- Centre the links (Steve suggests).
- Complete the rest of the comparisons on the presentation.
- Incorporate the final parts of the presentation in to the hand out.

Hi JB

The points you have made regarding the usability testing directly influencing the design and functionality of your site should make for a very interesting evaluation; I also feel that it will perhaps be a similar story for the majority of the class.

I am not sure what you mean when you say, "A few more things still need to be changed ... These things are the browser chrome colour". The browser chrome isn't the space either side of the website, its the space taken up by the browser and the browsers tool bars, etc.

The timed tasks are becoming generally accepted as being simply a part of what we do now. Everyone knows what is expected of them and appear keen to better their previous work.

Just to add clarity to a point you have raised, "Each of the previous timed task are said to be practice work", I do not believe this to be the case; the work we have undertaken so far IS assessable for the A6 project. I am sure that Steve will add clarity to this point if required.

Setting goals on a weekly basis as you have done is a great way of monitoring your own performance.

I can not believe we are almost 75% of the way through this year! Where oh where has the time gone?

With regard to what you said about your typographers fonts being very similar with just minor differences, I think you should see this as a good opportunity to delve into a lot of detail. The subtle differences are what makes a font. Use the specific terminology we were taught in the 'type anatomy' lecture to really look into the small differences. Look at the differences in the shapes of serifs. I'm sure there's plenty to talk about- and it is only 5 minutes, after all.

Hi JB

I as most others think that functionallity is what matters the most and that the site actualy does what you origonaly set out to make it do.

IE the goals that you set in place before you built the website. I my self found the feedback amensly helpful, i have improoved my site so much just from feedback and i am greatful that people was honest.

Thanks, Martyn

You are right Martyn

Honest during any testing (whether it be usability, aesthetics, etc), is essential.

People putting the answers that they think you want to hear thinking that they are helping you, can often be quite damaging.
